South West Germany Map - Places here include:
- Darmstadt - This cosmopolitan city is also regarded as a City of Science. The city is populated with architectural marvels of Jugendstil (Art Nouveau). Park Rosenhoehe and Orangerie are two parks to visit, other places include Mathildenhöhe and the Staatstheater. In the city surrounds there are some wonderful castles to visit, including the Burg Frankenstein.
- Frankfurt am Main - The financial centre of Germany, Frankfurt is on the Main River, which divides the city between old and new. Wonderful museums and art galleries, the Museum of Modern Art and the Stãdel Art Institute. Goethe, the writer, artist, biologist and mathmetician/physicist was born in this city.
- Freiburg im Breisgau - In the old centre of the town, the cathedral, Freiburg Minster, with its beautiful tower, dominates the surrounds. The tower itself was completed in 1330, it stands some 116 mtr high.
- Karlsruhe - The fan shaped city, bordered to the west by the Rhine River, was founded on June 17th 1715. Its streets are centered on the the stunning Karlsruhe Palace built by Margrave Charles William of Baden-Durlach. You can visit here, the Baden State Museum now occupies the building. The palace tower has a fantastic view of the city, laid out in a fan shape before it. Other notable places to visit include the Kaiserstrasse for shoppers, the Marktplatz und Pyramide, the Schloss Gottesaue, a Renaissance castle and the Platz der Grundrechte “the Place of Fundamental Rights”.
- Mainz - Wine capital of Germany and native home of Johannes Gutenberg, the printer. Attractions in the 2000-year-old city of Mainz includes the Roman temple, the royal palace and Marc Chagall’ss Blue Window.
- Mannheim - the unique chequered layout of the streets of Mannheim makes it easy to get around the city. Museums worth visiting include the Barockschloss Mannheim, the Kunsthalle Mannheim, the Museumsschiff, the Planetarium, the Reiss-Engelhorn-Museums and the TECHNOSEUM.
- Stuttgart - has the Mercedes-Benz Museum and the Porsche Museum for car lovers, parks and forests, the Art Museum, Solitude Palace, Neues Schloss - New Palace and the Stuttgart State Gallery, for amazing architecture.
- Wiesbaden - Harlekinaeum - museum dedicated to humour, the only in the world. Wiebaden has restored most of its old buildings, prime examples include the Kurhaus, with its green surrounds, the Hessian State Theatre, Villa Söhnlein, inspired by the White House in Washington D.C. and the Burg Sonnenberg, a castle dating back to 1200 with its sweeping views. There is also a small museum in the restored Tower of above the ruins of the castle.
- Worms - City of the Nibelungs, its magnificent St Peter’s Cathedral dates back to the 11th century. A Jewish community existed here for a thousand years, the Jewish cemetery in Worms is the oldest in Europe.
