Dubrovnik, located in Dalmatia has been rated as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Modern, it has retained its old world charm alongside the sea.

To the east is the Dubrovnik Old Town, still completely encircled by the wall designed to protect it during the medieval ages. The whole district has been declared a UNESCO protected World Heritage site.

Dubrovnik Old Town

The original town dates back to before 700 A.D., perhaps even back to ancient times due to its convenient? location between the Balkan hinterland and the Adriatic Sea.

A protected UNESCO site, Dubrovnik Old Town is a wonderful place to visit. This walled city has been preserved from the middle ages.

Not only is this town free of vehicles, there are towers, buildings, churches and monasteries from the gothic, renaissance and baroque periods.

You can actually walk on the encircling medieval city wall. Bring your camera, the views are magnificent of not only the town but the coast.

Exploring the town on foot, you can use the gentle sloping alleyways up to the highest points or use the wide stairways. You will plenty of points of interest along the way.

Cruise Ships

Dubrovnik is a favourite Mediterranean cruise stop on the way to Venice.

Usually only staying for the day, passengers still have plenty of choices, including visiting Fort Imperial overlooking the city, exploring the Old Town or touring other points of interest around Dalmatia.

Island of Lokrum

Just off the coast near the Dubrovnik Old Town is the Island of Lokrum, romantically referred to as the Isle of Love.

The whole island has been declared a natural reserve and there is a magnificent botanical garden located here that you can visit. Plants and trees from Australia and South America are a special attraction.

At Fort Royal, located on a high vantage point there are fine views of Dubrovnik and the hills in the hinterland, as well as the coast and other islands.

There are boats that can take you to the island of Lokrum at the Old Town harbour.
