South Europe Cities: see the Europe Map - North Europe Cities to Visit.
Many of the cities in South Europe date their beginnings to ancient times, long before written history. Some disappeared through changes in climate, fortune or war, only to be rediscovered, dug up and put on display.
The cultures of the Mediterranean waxed and waned over time as well as did empires.
The medieval ages were not as dark as supposed, however, once Europeans realised they did not know everything about the universe they began to question more, investigate more and look back to the classical times as well as overseas for new ideas.
Today, the result is an interesting mix of people and ideas living in modern cities with strong traditions and culture.
