Vienna, long a centre for culture has so much to see and do. Referred to as the City of Music for many reasons, the arts are promoted here and there are art galleries, opera houses, museums and places to eat.

The region has been occupied since 500 BC and the Romans fortified the city in 15 B.C.

After the original city walls that acted as protection in earlier times was removed, a wide street was made utilising the space created. Called the Ringstraße, it encircles the Old Town.

Along the Ringstraße, you will find important buildings of Vienna such as the Rathaus, the Burgtheatre, the Hofburg Palace, Parliament, museums and the Staatsoper Opera House. You can explore this famous street via horse-drawn carriages, buses, streetcars or on foot.

Places to Visit

Music is the speciality of this city, starting the with world famous Vienna Philharmonic and the Vienna Boys’ Choir.

There are over 100 museums in the city, you can be sure you will find one or more that relate to your particular interests.

Albertina Palace

The Albertina Palace, built in 1744 with a Neo-Classical design now houses an extensive collection of art. The building has been renovated to its royal splendour.

The state apartments, halls and reception have much of the original elegant furniture and fittings from the time, be sure to visit the Wedgwood Cabinet, a room with painted walls. Albertina.

Mozarthaus Vienna

Mozart had lived here where the museum now is. Occupying some 1,000 sq. meters on six levels, you can become immersed in the world he lived in. Mozarthaus Vienna.

Museum Moderner Kunst

This museum (MUMOK) exhibits the great artists from the 20th and 21st Centuries. Works made by Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Pablo Picasso and Gerhard Richter and many others are on display. Museum Moderner Kunst.

State Opera House

Vienna State Opera House is celebrated as the greatest in the world. World class performances are on 300 days a year, changed daily. You can also visit the museum, which gives a journey through time with costumes, photos, stage models and other exhibits. There are tours available of the Opera House itself. Golden Hall at the Musikverein

The Musikverein is the centre of Viennese musical culture, and its Golden Hall is aptly named. It is in this hall is where every year they hold the televised New Years Concert. To hear a live performance here is even better. Musikverein.

Kunsthistorisches Museum

The Art History Museum (Kunsthistorisches Museum) has wonderful art on display. The art from Ancient Egypt and Near Eastern collection is fascinating, as it the Greek and Roman.

Coins and musical instruments from through the ages, as well as armour from the 15th to the early 20th centuries are on exhibit. Paintings from the House of Habsburg form an extensive collection of 16th century art, also on display. Kunsthistorisches Museum.

Shopping in Vienna

The many shops and car free malls in the Old City offer a world of variety in fashion, accessories and jewelry. The lively Mariahilfer Straße is a great place to start your shopping, but if you have the time, do not ignore the many side streets. Another great place to shop in Vienna is the Naschmarkt area.
