Talllinn Estonia and Surrounds

Estonia on the North East Europe Map.

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia is located on the northern coast of the country and a popular stop off for the many cruise ships that ply the Baltic. The people here are primarily Estonians, with Russians (30%), Ukrainians and Finns making up the rest.

Places to Visit

One way to explore this city is with the TallinnCard, which gets you free or discounted entry to many of the museums and other attractions.

City Centre

In the city centre of Tallinn (Kesklinn), you can find luxury hotels, a good selection of eateries and restaurants and the business centre. Not far from here, about five minutes walk, is the Tallinn Old Town.

Tallinn Old Town

Another must see place of interest in Tallinn is the Old Town. Now an UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site, the relatively car free streets and the beautiful medieval buildings, surrounded by the historic city walls and towers occupy a strategic hill overlooking the city.

At the Town Hall Square, is the Gothic town hall. Now a museum, it explores the history of Estonia and its people. The building is one of the best preserved Gothic town halls in Europe.

Kadriorg Park

Kadriorg Park, surrounded by historical homes, is where you will find the art gallery of KUMU, with seven floors of Estonian art celebrating works through the ages to contemporary. It is also home to the Kadriorg Palace, originally the summer home Tsar Peter I and now an art museum and just a short walk away from KUMU.

There is also a Japanese Garden in the park and for the kids, the Miiamilla Children’s Museum is chock full of stuff for kids to do and explore (ages 3 to 11).

Estonian Open Air Museum

This open air museum at Rocca al Mare has 74 buildings from the 1700s to the early 1900s, complete with a tavern, churches, school, fire station, farms and even a Swiss Villa. It gives an amazing view of what life was like during those times.

The farms have domestic animals in the warmer months, but there is also wildlife about through the year. The buildings of each farm are all traditional farmhouses, which consist of a barn and connecting home.

Estonian Design House

At the Estonian Design House, there is design furniture, lighting, textiles, ceramics and glass as well as fashion. See more: Estonian Design House.
