Belgium is split into its Dutch speaking Flanders on the border of The Netherlands and the French speaking Wallonin along the border of France. Despite the difference in languages, Belgium is a great Europe place to visit as it celebrates its cultural diffences found nowhere else.

Brussels

Brussels, the capital of Belgium has a number of excellent museums and art galleries, but it is also a historical centre with is Grand Place, a magnificent plaza surrounded by grand guild houses, eateries and cafés. Entertainment available is for the most part world class, situated as it is in a central part of Europe’s crossroads.

The city has made many of its other streets in plazas lined with picturesque historical buildings and outdoor restaurants. Brussels is also the policital capital of the EU and as such will always be an important part of Europe. More about Brussels Belgium.

Flanders

In Flanders, there are medieval cities such as Bruges and Ghent, as well as the large city of Antwerp, the capital. In the countryside, the many castles and magnificent churches complete the picture.

Antwerp has been known since medieval times as a trade centre, being the largest port in Belgium and one of the largest in Europe. The city is also known as a centre for fashion and a great place to shop.

Antwerp also has a thriving diamond trade, visitors come from all over the world to buy them, but it more than a place to shop. This modern cosmopolitan city combines the old and new with stunning architecture, wonderful art galleries and has a great collection of restaurants, both Belgian and from all over the world.

Wallonia

Wallonia, to the south-east of Flanders and Namur as its capital, has French as the language of choice while German is preferred further to the west. Cities to explore in this region of Belgium include Charleroi, Liège, Mons and Tournai.

Getting Around Belgium

It is easy to get to and around Belgium. There are plenty of freeways that traverse the country as there are railways. Buses service the parts of the country not reached by trains.

Travel Requirements

For entry to Belgium, those with US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand passports as well as EU citizens do not need to apply for visas. If you wish to drive here, you will need your drivers license, car registration papers and insurance documentation for your car. Vehicle rental companies, of course, provide the last two for car rentals.
